We are proud to be a part of one of the largest historical renovations in Mobile’s history with Heritage Land & Development and The Crump Firm – Merchants Plaza. For almost two years, the 18-story former Merchants National Bank building has been under construction and is being converted into an upscale mixed-use development consisting of 73 luxury apartment units (with six different layouts) and retail space on the first floor.
Merchants Tower opened in 1929 and was the headquarters for Merchants National Bank for almost 50 years. It was the first skyscraper on along the Gulf Coast and the tallest building in Alabama outside of Birmingham. It’s now the 6th tallest in downtown Mobile.
Historical projects always test the knowledge, management, and creativity of a team. It’s always a challenge to maintain very specific historical elements, while also bringing a building up to code, and converting the entire original function of the building. And a challenge we love!
For this project, we had to demo a section on every floor to build a new interior stairwell for egress to bring the building up to code. We had to preserve the original elevators, while also using them to move materials and people between floors during construction. These were just a couple of the many challenges our team faced, but we’re almost complete!
The new Merchants Plaza is accepting residential and commercial lease applications. For more information on this project, check out “Merchants Plaza changes the game for downtown mobile” by Ron Sivak for Lagniappe Mobile or “Downtown Living in Mobile Heating Up!” from NAI Mobile.
