White-Spunner completed the new, full service Student Recreation Center in September, 2010. The sprawling facility was finished on schedule and contains more than 117,000 square feet of sports and health activities, including four indoor basketball courts, indoor soccer area; 1/10 mile elevated indoor running track, multi-level rock climbing wall, aerobic rooms, racquetball courts, weight rooms, indoor and outdoor pools. The project includes a true "Domed Ellipse" which covers the free weight area. The ellipse is constructed using exposed heavy laminated wood trusses decked with structural tongue and groove cypress. The Ellipses was a construction challenge as was the preservation of five 100-year-old Live Oak trees which involved protection of both the limbs and the roots during the entire construction process. Building an approximately 7,500 square-foot deck around the trees in the facility?s courtyard preserved the majestic oaks.
"The Student Recreation Center is an amazing facility. It provides a positive, wholesome environment for members of our university community to participate in fitness and recreational activities of all sorts. The Student Recreation Center offers a healthy social setting for our students. I believe that it will help our students to develop lifelong patterns of fitness, health, and wellness," states Dr. Philip A. Theodore, Director of Campus Recreation.
