The Grand Hotel is a jewel on Mobile Bay. For over a century, visitors have flocked to the eastern shore to enjoy the first-class amenities of this resort hotel in an incomparable waterfront setting. Constructed in 1847, the hotel has survived natural disasters including hurricanes, floods and a fire. It has also endured a few man-made disasters. During the Civil War, it was used as an army hospital for Confederate soldiers. That rich legacy is part of what makes the hotel such a valuable and enduring piece of the area’s history. Consequently, it also created a challenge for White-Spunner Construction when it came to renovating the existing hotel. Due to the age of the building, no blueprints were available, causing the design team to re-create items. The company was hired as part of a larger renovation project to redesign the kitchen, Bucky’s Birdcage Lounge, the grand dining room, lobby and ballroom. The hotel remained open during the renovation process.
