In just under two years, White-Spunner Construction completed this full-service student recreation center in September 2010. The 117,000-square-foot facility was finished on schedule and includes four basketball courts, an indoor soccer area, a 1/10-mile elevated indoor running track, a multi-level rock climbing wall, aerobic
rooms, racquetball courts, weight rooms, and indoor and outdoor pools. The spacious facility also includes separate cardio, spinning, free weight and multi-purpose rooms. The center offers a full-service smoothie and snack bar, a table tennis area, men’s and women’s saunas, locker rooms, showers, and dressing areas. The project includes a true 'domed ellipse' which covers the free weight area. The ellipse was constructed using exposed heavy laminated wood trusses decked with structural tongue and groove cypress. Building the ellipse was a challenge as was the preservation of five 100-year-old Live Oak trees, which involved protection of both the limbs and roots during the entire construction process. A 7,500-square-foot deck was built around the trees in the facility’s courtyard to preserve the majestic oaks.
