Mobile-based firm finishes two-story structure in one-year, allowing space for future civic center on third deck Mobile, AL (September tbd, 2010) White-Spunner Construction, Inc. recently completed a two-story parking deck for the city of Bay St. Louis, MS laying the groundwork and creating space for a future civic center on the building’s third floor. The Mobile, AL -based general contracting, design build and construction management firm - with branch offices in Austin, TX, Raleigh, N.C. and Gulfport, MS - broke ground on the $3,182,922 parking garage in August 2009 and recently completed the project in August of this year. The 31,680-square-foot concrete and steel structure with 100 parking spaces in the garage and 22 on the surface features solar panels, power backup, and pile foundation. The project also includes an exposed cast in-place “planked finish,” plastic underground rainwater collection tank for irrigation purposes. Other notable features include “green screen” panels to create a “Living Wall” where plants will grow along wire panels to create a green landscape. “All rainwater from the parking deck is collected in a tank and used for irrigating the plants,” said Seth Smith, project manager for White-Spunner Construction. White-Spunner Construction met numerous project challenges in building the structure including removal of existing jail facilities and foundation, unknown conditions, tight working space, heavy rebar structure construction and various design changes. “We faced many challenges in the building of this parking deck,” stated Smith. “White-Spunner is pleased to have met all of them head on, staying within budget and finishing the project on time. We feel that the entire Bay St. Louis community will be proud of this new parking deck, which provides space for a future civic center on the third tier.”
